Nearly Half of Women Think Nose Hair Is Gross. We were certain that bad breath is the ultimate turn off, but it turns out women may despise nose hair just as much.

In a recent survey, we asked more than 400 Women’s Health readers if they would rather meet a guy at the bar with terrible breath or visible tufts of nose hair. The result: 46 percent of women would rather talk to a guy whose mouth smells like a sewer than a guy with a few strays sticking out.

It’s a problem almost every guy has to deal with eventually. For instance, when we polled more than Men’s Health readers on the issue, only two percent said they never had to trim, pluck, or resignedly accept their nose hair.

We don’t recommend just letting nature take its course. While the hairs in your nostrils keep foreign particles from entering your body, visible nose hair is pretty useless.

The most common way to keep it in check is regular use of a nose hair trimmer. Craig Whitely, one of Hollywood’s leading male image and grooming consultants, recommends using trimmers as often as necessary to remove visible hair.

Pinch your nose and twist it to the left, then cut off whatever hair is exposed. Repeat on the right side, and you’re done. Simple and painless.

“A lot of research has shown it’s okay to remove more, but to protect yourself from things like allergies and pollen, I say it’s best to leave everything you can’t see,” Whitely says.

He also advises against using a battery-powered trimmer, because it can die mid-trim, snagging your hair while the battery fades. “I’ve heard the horror stories, and that’s enough for me,” Whitely says. He recommends the Groom Mate Platinum.

If you want to step it up a level, you can tweeze. This works best if you only have a few hairs to deal with, and Whitely isn’t a big fan of the method because it’s painful. But there is an upside: You’ll need to do it less often than trimming, and it’s easier to maintain.

Clean your tweezers before and after grooming to reduce your risk of infection. Grip the hair at the root and give it one quick pull. It’s going to hurt: Just accept it and get it over with quickly.

A word of caution: Pluck deliberately. The only thing worse than ripping out one nose hair is ripping out four. And don’t use your fingers.
