5 Simple Grooming Tips For Looking Younger
What if you could de-age your face in seconds? The technology may be closer than you think.
Researchers at Harvard and M.I.T. recently discovered that you can paint an invisible film of safe, FDA-approved chemicals on your face to instantly reduce wrinkles and under-eye bagging. The scientists call the chemical formula a “second skin,” and while it could eventually be used to dispense pore-absorbed medications, for now it’s being trialed for cosmetic use.
As cool as this scientific breakthrough is, there are cheaper, quicker, natural fixes you can try before applying a skin you’ll have to shed like a snake. Here are five simple grooming techniques to help you feel and look your freshest.
Splash With Warm Water
According to grooming lore, hot water opens pores and cold closes them. But, like many common beliefs, it’s hogwash.
“Pores don’t open and close like a door,” says Geoffrey Genesky, Ph.D., Head of the Kiehl’s Skincare and Suncare Laboratory.
Instead, splash your face with lukewarm water, as heat strips the skin’s natural oils.
Massage Your Face
Cleanse twice a day and rub your face for a minute, forehead down, to ward off bacteria, Genesky advises.
When you massage your skin, you’ll also trigger a collagen rush, says Danae Markland, an aesthetician at PCA Skin. This will make your face appear brighter.
Take a Dunk
This homespun hack hurts, says model Jack Guinness, but it also works: “Dunk your face into ice-cold water and keep it there for as long as you can bear. It tightens your skin and brings blood to your face, making it look better instantly.”
Strike a Balance
All skin is naturally acidic, but because soaps are mostly alkaline, your pH level can go a little wonky. A gentle, alcohol-free toner will restore the balance.
Try one containing alpha hydroxy acids such as Menscience’s Advanced Face Tonic ($31, menscience.com).
Give Your Face a Workout
“The 57 muscles in your face and neck need exercise, too,” says facial muscle expert Danielle Collins.
